Development of IoT-Based Smart Agriculture and Computer Vision to Detect Changes in Chili Plant Leaf Conditions

When cultivating chilies, farmers need to continue to pay attention to environmental conditions as well as the growth of their plants. Leaves are the easiest part to use as clues, because changes in color, shape or other appearance can indicate disturbances in the plant. However, monitoring carried out directly by humans has weaknesses: checks must be carried out regularly, and their accuracy really depends on the observer's ability to read the signs that appear. In addition, environmental data such as soil moisture content, temperature and air humidity generally have not been combined with the visual conditions of plants during monitoring. To answer this problem, this research built a Smart Agriculture system that combines the Internet of Things (IoT) with Computer Vision to recognize changes in chili leaves. ESP32 acts as the main controller which is connected to soil moisture, temperature and air humidity sensors so that the environmental conditions of plants can be recorded. Meanwhile, the camera takes pictures of the leaves periodically, then the images go through the preprocessing and Computer Vision analysis stages to explore the visual characteristics of the leaves. The results of sensor readings and image analysis are then combined in one monitoring system, so that environmental conditions and changes in plant appearance can be monitored simultaneously. The system was tested by matching the detection results with the leaf conditions actually observed throughout the study. In the future, this system is expected to offer a more organized way of monitoring plants, as well as being the basis for the development of Smart Agriculture which brings together sensor data and image analysis on one platform.
