Abstract

The use of public Wi-Fi networks presents various security risks, such as Domain Name System (DNS) spoofing, network traffic eavesdropping, and man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks. DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are two security mechanisms that can be employed to mitigate these risks; however, they serve different functions and offer different scopes of protection. This study aims to analyze and compare the roles of DNSSEC and VPNs in addressing security threats on public Wi-Fi networks. A qualitative descriptive approach was adopted, utilizing a literature review and an analysis of the characteristics and protective scope of each mechanism. The analysis indicates that DNSSEC focuses on the authentication and integrity of DNS data through cryptographic signatures, whereas a VPN protects the confidentiality of network traffic via an encrypted tunnel. DNSSEC does not directly protect all network traffic from eavesdropping, while a VPN does not, by itself, guarantee the authenticity of DNS data. Consequently, these two mechanisms serve complementary functions and cannot fully replace one another. Using them in tandem can provide more comprehensive protection against specific threats on public Wi-Fi networks, provided that the configuration and implementation of each mechanism are carefully considered.
